Stella Parton recalled Dolly Parton’s heartbreak as Carl Dean’s health deteriorated.

Dolly Parton’s sister Stella Parton has offered a rare glimpse into the late country music legend’s deeply private relationship with her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, describing their decades-long marriage as a “sweet, private romance.Speaking to CBS Mornings, Stella, 77, reflected on Dolly and Dean’s relationship following the singer’s death at 80 on August 25. Dean died at the age of 82 in March 2025.Stella said she believed the couple shared a bond that was “very unique and very deep and loyal,” while recalling how difficult it was for Dolly to watch her husband’s health deteriorate.“I know their relationship was very unique and very deep and loyal. And I think it broke her heart to see him in the shape he, you know, got to before he passed away,” Stella said. However, she stressed that she did not believe Dean’s death or declining health was what caused Dolly’s own health struggles.

‘My sister worked so hard for so long’

According to Stella, Dolly remained devoted to her work almost until the end of her life.“But I don’t think that’s what made her sick. I think my sister worked so hard for so long and just kept going,” she said. “You know, even to the last conversation I had with her, she was working. That was her passion.”Stella also recalled the contrasting personalities of Dolly and Dean, saying he loved his wife enough to allow her to live life on her own terms, despite possibly preferring a quieter domestic life for her.“He would rather her be at the house with her hair up in a ponytail and barefooted, cookin’ in the kitchen and just, you know, messin’ around the house,” Stella said.

Carl Dean supported Dolly from behind the scenes

Dean largely stayed away from the spotlight throughout their marriage, while Dolly became one of the most recognisable entertainers in the world.Dolly had previously offered a similar description of her husband during a 2025 interview with PEOPLE, portraying him as an intensely private man who preferred life away from the entertainment industry.“My husband was very independent, and he liked being alone. He didn’t really care about being with anybody but me,” Dolly said. She explained that Dean enjoyed spending time on the farm and largely kept to himself.“He was kind of a loner, which worked out best for us,” she added.

Dolly and Carl married privately in 1966

Dolly and Dean married in a private ceremony in 1966 and remained together for nearly six decades. The couple did not have children and generally kept their personal life away from public scrutiny.Despite their differences, Dolly repeatedly described their marriage as a lasting love story.“Ours is a great old love story,” she previously told PEOPLE.“Most people don’t stay that close that long. That’s a loss. Nobody can ever know that unless you’ve experienced it yourself. He will always be in my heart and in my memories,” she said.Dolly had also spoken about how their contrasting personalities helped keep their relationship strong.“They say that opposites attract, and it’s true,” she told PEOPLE in 2015.“We’re completely opposite, but that’s what makes it fun. I never know what he’s gonna say or do. He’s always surprising me,” she said.
